Thsi is what you should have done before the Glass & Ceramics trip before the July trip.
  • The four posts that dealt with the class plus one dealing on a glass town =5
  • One post for your experience at Blenko Glass =1
  • Ten posts of what you learned about glass that can be used in your classroom =10
  • Also need 18 responses to other participants blogs in the class
  • Remember to make all your posts student oriented so that you can bring this experience back to the classroom.
Here is the check-off list that is up to date thus far (7/1/13): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Al87tXdKq_e8dGhKYWE1MHBOSTJnd0J2Y0RSS1RSaHc&usp=sharing

Also be thinking about your virtual field trip video that will need to be posted towards your blog and Google sites. I have created a video to aid you in inserting the video into Google sites. You can also check out my virtual field trip that I have posted to my blog and the website.

Hope to have a great time as we depart next week to discover glass and ceramics in our region.

Project Documents and Updates

We have been putting documents for the project in a shared space in the cloud that is available to you.  The free service we are using is copy.com.  If you haven't signed up for a free account, go to
https://copy.com?r=eY8rNH and create an account.  The cloud storage can be accessed from the web or can be installed on a laptop (Windows, Mac or Linux) as well as on a tablet (iOS or Android).
At this time, slides for the three glass content sessions, a participant contact list, a KML file of summer trip locations and a draft itinerary for the summer are all available and have been shared with you.  You should be able to access these documents once you have created an account at the link above.  By storing these documents on copy.com we can update planning documents as they continue to develop and provide you with the latest information.
The shared folder is at: https://copy.com/daGFeCswWZcu

Week 3: Technology

Today's goal is to be able to work with video and embed video within a blog post. Video is a great resource that students can use and it can be a platform to get student responses. Some of the best videos that I notice on YouTube are the ones that require a response from the audience. A great channel that I would suggest that everyone look over is 1Veritasium. This channel is great in offering inquiry type videos that get students to think about what they are seeing. It challenges the misconceptions of the students and offers an alternative explanation towards the students misconception. The spinning tube trick is by far the best video that offers an example of a inquiry based video.

Before Week 4

  • Group 2 Glass Town Presentation: Amanda Flora, Mike Krenzel, Joe Thacker, Rebekka Atkins, Amy Maynard, Rick Sharpe, Wes Neal, Tanya Hill, & Jennifer Edwards
  • Have your video uploaded to vimeo and posted towards your blog (video on how to embed vimeo into blogger)
  • This is a screencast for how to make folders and add blogs to the feedly reader

Week 3 Blog Post

  • Create a 1 minute video that gets students to think about the mysteries of glass. (upload this video to vimeo)

Remember to update your blogs

Just a gentle reminder to keep your blog up to date and to monitor this blog as well as comment on blogs of other participants.
Brian has prepared a set of criteria for your blogs so please take time to review what we need to be blogging for the glass project.  To make it easier for others to comment on your blog posts, we suggest that you turn the word verification off.  This is the requirement to enter a scrambled word and letters before your comments can be published to a fellow participant's blog.  It is quick and easy to turn this word verification off.  A short one minute video has been prepared that shows you how to make this change.  The video is at the bottom of the list of help videos on this blog.
We will look forward to seeing you on Thursday evening for more study of the glass industry in the state.

Week 2: Technology

It looks like Christmas has come early with all the technology that you will be receiving on week two of class. With the advent of common core literacy standards, the goal for this week is to be able to integrate speaking within your classroom. Within the first semester I had my students work on a writing prompt in which they had to record themselves and post to the class blog. The students and myself noticed the mistakes once the paragraphs were read verbatim out loud. The program that I use for this is known as audioboo, which allows for up to three minutes of recording with unlimited amount of sound recordings. The great thing about this application is that you are able to embed the audio within a blog or a website.

Things to do before next meeting 4/18/13

  • Download the following apps: Blogger, Feedly, Audioboo, Vimeo, and Google Drive
  • Group 1 Presentations of Glass Town: Danielle Vance, David Williams, Kellie Wood, Chris Colegrove, Carla Snell, Wendy Chapman, William Strait, Brian McNeel
  • Week 2 Blog Post
    • Use audioboo to create a podcast and embed within a post
      • This could be a summary of Dean Six presentation or something that will help you in your class.
